Many systems rely on metabolic activity as a marker of contamination. This methodology is sound as microbiologists are required to culture the organisms routinely in order to provide further test results such as antibiotic sensitivity. It therefore makes sense to utilise this growth requirement as part of the detection strategy.

Like other instruments currently available, Bactest has adopted a measurement of metabolic activity as the method of detecting contamination by viable organisms, in this case utilising the highly sensitive pressure transients produced as a by-product of metabolism.
