Growth rates of organisms in conventional systems may be limited due to a number of technical and logistical factors. Heat sterilised culture media requires the addition of additional growth factors for the culture of fastidious organisms, increasing the cost and introducing the potential for contamination while adding the extra component, and therefore potentially increasing false positives.

Culture conditions in many blood culture devices were noted to be sub-optimal, particularly where mixing of nutrients and gasses were concerned, reducing the effective availability of these key components to the growing organisms.
