Out Of Hours Sampling

Detection of organisms in conventional systems may be limited due to number of technical and logistical factors. Of particular concern to microbiologists and clinicians is the potentially serious delay accruing due to out of hours sampling.

This is due to Patients presenting and blood being taken, often in the middle of the night when the Microbiology Laboratory is closed.

Other common issues communicated by Scientists include a significant lag-phase occurring in cultures if samples are not inoculated into suitable culture medium immediately after the sample has been taken and reduce viability of the organisms (leading to longer detection times) for samples held in sub-optimal conditions.
